You will need to give permission and pay Microsoft direct if you wish to backup Teams channel chats with CloudCover 365

Microsoft brought a new set of Teams Export APIs in place which was designed to allow access to Team Chats directly. From 31st January 2023, Microsoft deprecated any access to the TeamsMessageData folder, this means Team Export APIs will be the only way to go for working with Teams message data in the future.

In order to enable and protect these APIs in your Microsoft 365 tenant, you will need to apply permissions to do so, in addition to this Microsoft will be applying charges to their customers for using these APIs. Details of what to do to enable the Teams chat backup feature is shown below:

Associate Subscription with App Registration for Billing

Ensure that your subscription is associated with the app registration for billing purposes.

If the app registration is not linked with a valid billable subscription, Microsoft Teams Export API access will fail with the following error:

'Failed to process team: <Team Name>. To call this API, the app must be associated with an Azure subscription'

When signing up for the first time, the option to enable teams chat API will be disabled as shown below

After signing up successfully for the first time, on subsequent signups it will be enabled. Teams chat API can be enabled and signup can be completed successfully, only if the subscription is associated with the app registration for billing, as mentioned above.
